Haunted Cocktails Poison Laveau

How to Make a Poison Laveau?

One of most famous individuals from New Orleans is Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau. She was not an evil mystic, as she is often portrayed. She was a free woman of color with a strong personality, a devout Catholic, a fierce community activist, and a clever entrepreneur. She combined her Voodoo practices with Catholic traditions, making it more acceptable to white society. Marie Laveau had the kind of power that was both respected and feared and that’s why she is a true legend that will never be forgotten. So, in her honor, I journeyed back to my bartending days to create the “Poison Laveau.” This cocktail is a sophisticated and powerful mix of whiskey and pomegranate, with a float of Grand Marnier and a splash of moonshine, that commands the respect of a true Voodoo Queen.

Haunted Cocktails – Poison Laveau Recipe:

  • Ice
  • 1.5 oz Whiskey, your choice
  • .5 oz Blueberry Moonshine
  • 3-4 dashes Bitters
  • 4 oz Pomegranate Juice
  • Grenadine/cherry juice to rim glass (add food coloring to darken)
  • Sugar for rimming glass
  • .5 oz Grand Marnier

Directions:

Step One: Dip the rim of your glass in Grenadine and then dip in sugar until inside and outside of rim are coated.

Step Two: Add Ice, Whiskey, Moonshine, Pomegranate Juice, and Bitters to a shaker and then shake.

Step Three: Carefully pour mixture, including ice, into glass.

Step Four: Slowly pour Grand Marnier over the back of a spoon to float on top.

Step Five: Enjoy!
