Cincinnati Private Nightmares and Nightcaps Tour

Your group meets its costumed guide at Arnold's Bar and Grill, pouring since 1861 and home to at least one regular who has not left since. Order an optional nightcap, hear about the spirits behind the bar, then head out for about a mile of walking through historic downtown Cincinnati and into Over-the-Rhine. The route passes the brewery-era buildings, the tunnels beneath them and the corners where the neighborhood's German immigrants, bootleggers and unlucky residents met ends that explain the reports of footsteps in empty rooms.

This tour suits a friends' night out, a bachelorette crew that wants chills with its cocktails, a date night with a little adrenaline or a work team that prefers one good drink and ninety minutes of stories to a long crawl. Private tours run every day with start times from 1 pm to 8 pm, and the duration, meeting location and drink stop can be adjusted. If your hotel is close to the route, the guide may be able to meet you there for a small additional charge.

Pricing starts at $325 for up to 10 guests, with additional tickets from $27.50, and rises to $375 from mid-September through mid-November. One guide takes 18 to 22 guests depending on the date; groups of 16 or more book by email and larger groups add a guide. Everyone must be 18 or older, and only guests 21+ with ID can buy alcohol. The streetcar stops at 8th and Main near the start, and parking near Taft's Ale House or Washington Park puts you close to the finish.
