San Diego Nightmares and Nightcaps Tour

The tour starts with an optional nightcap at the Horton Grand Hotel, a Victorian survivor with a few guests who have been checked in since the 1880s. Your costumed guide shares the stories of the spirits behind the bar, then leads you out along the famed Fifth Avenue and through the Gaslamp Quarter's nearly one hundred historic buildings, covering up to a mile on mostly flat ground with shadowy nightmares, as we like to say, at every corner.
The stories dig into the Gaslamp's rough-and-tumble past as the Stingaree red-light district, the haunted hotels and restaurants that still operate along Fifth, the spooky vessels docked in the harbor, the lighthouses that kept watch over them and the house the US Congress has designated the most haunted in America. Your guide may or may not keep you up at night, depending on how much of it you believe. The locals mostly believe it.
The walk runs about ninety minutes and ends with your guide's recommendation for one of the oldest, most haunted bars in the Gaslamp so the night can continue. All guests must be 18 or older; only guests 21+ with ID may buy alcohol, and the nightcap is never required. Tours run in all weather, and the route is not recommended for anyone with mobility restrictions.

Do I need to be 21?
No. The tour is open to anyone 18 and older. You only need to be 21 with valid ID if you want to order the nightcap at the Horton Grand.
Is the drink included?
No. The nightcap is optional and paid at the bar. Plenty of guests come for the stories alone.
How much walking is there?
Up to a mile over about 90 minutes on relatively flat Gaslamp sidewalks. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, and the route is not ideal for limited mobility.
When does the tour run?
Public departures run seasonally, mainly in the fall, with private tours available year-round. Check the calendar for current dates.
