Charleston Haunted History Field Trip
Charleston's history is full of pirates, forts and the occasional poltergeist, which makes it an excellent classroom. Our Haunted History Field Trip brings students through the Historic District with a costumed guide who knows how to hold a crowd.
๐ Departs from: Vendue Range Splash Fountain at entrance to Waterfront Park โ please arrive about 15 minutes early to check in with your guide.
Groups meet their guide at Waterfront Park, once the hub of Charleston's maritime traffic, where the walk opens with Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter on the horizon and the role each played in the city's and the nation's story. From there the route moves through the Historic District past some of the oldest buildings in the city, cemeteries dating to the 1700s, the dungeons and jails that held pirates and criminals, and the alleys where, according to legend, a few of them still roam. Students may hear about being shanghaied by pirates or pranked by poltergeists, with the real history woven through every tale.
The walking tour is recommended for ages 9 and up and is offered to school groups in grades 1 through 12, camps and youth organizations, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, for groups of 5 to 100. For younger students a guide can come to you in historic costume with stories and games adjusted for the age level. Our guides are storytellers with deep Charleston history and paranormal backgrounds, experienced with kids and fully background-checked.
Pricing is a flat $215 for groups of 15 or fewer, $15 per student for 16 to 40 and $13 per student over 40, each plus a 15% service charge. One chaperone per 10 students is free, aides for participants with disabilities are free and extra adults are $20. Bring bagged lunches for Waterfront Park, and pair the trip with the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, the Old Slave Mart Museum or the South Carolina Aquarium nearby.
